Nest has long been a holdout on Apple’s Siri-controlled HomeKit platform, and many have speculated it will never add support due to its ties with Google and its competing offerings. But this week the company told us it’s at least considering adopting HomeKit following some big changes for hardware authentication requirements announced this month.

When we asked the company if it would look into newly announced iOS 11 features that allow old products to easily add support, a Nest spokesperson officially told us its “open to supporting” the platform and that it will indeed “consider HomeKit.”
During WWDC earlier this month, Apple made an important announcement coming soon to its HomeKit platform with iOS 11 that didn’t get enough attention. It’s introducing software authentication support, which isn’t only a big deal for getting older, already shipping accessories on the platform, but also notable in general for Apple which for the most part requires a hardware authentication chip in accessories that pass through its official Made-for-iPhone (and iPad, and Apple Watch) licensing program.
The update will be out with iOS 11 in the fall just ahead of the new HomePod Siri speaker that will serve as Apple’s first standalone device for controlling HomeKit products at home.
While many have speculated that Nest wouldn’t support HomeKit due to its affiliation with Google and parent company Alphabet, but that’s not the case based on Nest’s statement to us that it’s “open to supporting HomeKit.” Hardware authentication has long been a large barrier for Nest and other companies not supporting the platform, but that will no longer be an issue later this year with iOS 11…
Up until now, a hardware authentication requirement for HomeKit meant a lot of companies, especially those that have a lineup of multiple smart home products, couldn’t easily add support retroactively or without added cost. Many companies slowly added support by meeting HomeKit requirements as they designed newer generation of products, but some are still holdouts.
In Belkin’s case, the company has not yet supported HomeKit on newer products to avoid an inconsistent experience with other existing products in its Wemo line of smart home products. It eventually, however, announced in May plans for a new bridge product that will add support later this year.
HomeKit already includes support for all product types in Nest’s product line, including security cameras, thermostats, and smoke and fire sensors. This year, Apple will add support for sprinklers and faucets in iOS 11, making for a total 16 product types on the list that also now includes garage doors, window shades, security devices, humidifiers, air conditioners, locks, air purifiers, lights, outlets, fans, cameras, and doorbells.

TLDR 2 Nest Thermostat E's disconnecting a couple of times every hour from Google Wifi
EDIT: So I replaced my Google WiFi with an edgerouter x and ubiquiti unifi wireless access point last night and configured it with a 2 and 5ghz ssid so no smart steering or switching. Only one wap for the nest to deal with. Extremely frustrated and disappointed that I am still having the exact same issue. Both tstats are still randomly going offline. I have tried resetting their Network settings and restarting them multiple times. The radio ssid's are entirely different. I've also checked the battery to make sure it's not that and battery never goes below 3.9v. So frustrated right now. Going to try and call nest support back today and try to get someone on the phone who cares. Really don't know what else the problem could be??
I'm a heavy Nest user (overall love it! Have had my thermostats since gen 2 first came out). I currently have 2 Nest Thermostat Es, 2 Nestcam Outdoors, 2 Nest Protects, and a Nest Secure system.

I upgraded my router (or so I thought) to a Google Wifi 3 puck mesh system...I've seen countless good reviews on it and plenty of happy Nest users that have them and never have a problem. At the same time upgraded from Spectrum cable connection to a Comporium 1gb x 1gb fiber connection. Love it! Amazing speeds. It's a 3400 sq ft 2 story house and the coverage is great. Previous Netgear AC1900 had a few gaps in some corners.
When I first got the Google Wifi, I still had the Nest Thermostat Gen 2's and didn't think I'd need to upgrade any time soon. Well after I switched everything over to Google Wifi from the previous router, I noticed the thermostats started disconnecting randomly a couple of times an hour. Now, when they do this they just say unavailable in the app. They are usually offline anywhere from 7 - 12 minutes...Never any longer than 12. If I touch one of the thermostats then it will instantly pop back online in the app.
Not long after that I saw the announcement of the new thermostat sensors (finally!) and then discovered they weren't compatible with the gen 2 thermostats. So of course, time for an upgrade. I got 2 of the E's because why not. I actually prefer the way they look and blend into the wall a bit. We never use them at the wall anyways so lesser screen isn't a big deal. I figured getting the newer thermostat would solve the disconnecting issue...Wrong.
Fast forward 3 weeks and still having issues. I've tried everything I can possibly think of including spending 3 hours on the phone with Nest support. They put me through to the next level of support but ultimately told me I need to contact Google Wifi support (the one thing I have not done yet).
Here are the things I've tried as well as some random useful facts:
I've reset (countless times) the nest thermostat network settings. Nest support told me to actually clear the settings completely that it needs to be performed twice.
I've changed my SSID and even done a complete factory reset on the Google wifi
Complete reset of the Nest thermostats including removing and adding back to the app
Tried reserved IPs for the thermostats in the Google Wifi app
The issues started with the gen 2 thermostats and carried over to the new E
Last time before doing a factory reset on the Google Wifi I noticed that both thermostats (Es) were connected at 2.4ghz...After the reset, one connected at 5ghz and one at 2.4ghz. They never changed once first connected. The one at 5ghz is still having the same connection issues though
I've googled myself to death here and search the subreddit up and down and cannot find a single person having issues with their nest thermostat and Google Wifi...A few other random odd issues but never with their thermostat. Every other Nest device I have is rock solid on the network. Does anyone have any ideas at all? I'm at a loss here and about to return the Google Wifi and go with something else...Although I really want to keep it because it's been great other than this one thing.
